Go Outside and Catch Some Rays

The average child spends 1,200 hours a year in front of a screen, so Ginny Yurich began a campaign to help children spend 1,000 hours outside. Healthy Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods is accepting the challenge, and we can all be part of the movement. COVID-19 is making Americans even more sedentary, and the effects could be long-lasting.

Getting outside for a brisk walk daily can have profound improvement on the health of body, mind and spirit. Participants will submit their information on the website and receive a monthly newsletter on the benefits of being outdoors, activity ideas, hour-tracking tools, motivation and more.

Prevention should be woven into all aspects of our lives, including where and how we live, learn, work and play. Everyone—government, businesses, educators, healthcare institutions, communities and every single American—has a role in creating a healthier nation.

The mission of Healthy Grosse Pointe/Harper Woods is to reduce substance abuse among youth across the community and promote optimal mental health through action, education and collaboration. Open community meetings are held at 9:30 a.m. on the third Wednesday of the month via Zoom.
