Music-Based Family Classes Support Emotional Growth and Bonding

Mindful and Musical offers intergenerational classes that nurture connection, emotional development and community through music and movement. Founded in 2015 by singer, songwriter and yoga teacher Miriam Picó Younce, the Traverse City-based program invites families with young children to engage in playful, enriching experiences that combine storytime, song and mindfulness practices.

Held weekly at The Alluvion inside the Commongrounds Cooperative, classes are available for children from newborns through age 4 and include Baby Bird and Mini-Bird programs. An intergenerational class, We’re Better Together, meets within assisted living communities, fostering interaction between young children and elders. Pop-up classes on Saturday mornings offer additional opportunities for family participation throughout the year.

Each class blends music, movement and social-emotional learning, introducing children to sign language, Spanish and foundational concepts such as kindness, peace and self-awareness. Families sing, stretch, explore instruments and connect through guided activities designed to support early development and meaningful bonding.

Mindful and Musical also leads weekly sing-alongs for elders across the Grand Traverse area, offering beloved songs and simple percussion instruments to foster engagement and comfort in memory care and hospice settings. These offerings reflect a commitment to making music a bridge between generations and a tool for emotional care.
