Food Sovereignty Initiative Expands Urban Agriculture in Detroit

Efforts to expand local food production and improve access to fresh produce continue to grow in Detroit through initiatives focused on building a food sovereign city. Keep Growing Detroit works with residents to cultivate fruits and vegetables within city limits, strengthening community-based agriculture.

The approach supports long-term food access while promoting sustainable growing practices across the region. The organization provides resources and support to urban gardeners and farmers, helping increase the amount of locally grown food available to Detroit households. Through partnerships and community engagement, these efforts contribute to a more resilient and self-sustaining food system.

A central component of this work is the Garden Resource Program, which offers members in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park access to seeds, Detroit-grown transplants and technical support. Participants receive guidance from experienced staff to improve growing success and expand production capacity.

In addition, the organization hosts an Education Series featuring interactive classes led by local growers and chefs. These sessions cover foundational gardening skills and advanced techniques, supporting continued development in both cultivation and food preparation.
