Nature Center Creates Meaningful Outdoor Experiences for the Community
Educational programs, conservation initiatives and community events help Fenner Nature Center connect people of all ages with the natural world in the heart of Lansing. Managed by Fenner Conservancy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to conservation, education and stewardship, the center offers year-round programs designed to inspire environmental awareness and foster meaningful relationships with nature.
Through a wide variety of public programs, festivals, camps and educational experiences, Fenner Nature Center serves children, families, students and community groups throughout the region. Its place-based learning approach helps participants better understand environmental issues while encouraging responsible stewardship of natural resources. Programs include school field trips, scout activities, summer camps, nature exploration events and hands-on learning experiences that engage visitors in the outdoors.
The organization also operates Fenner Nature Preschool, which utilizes a child-led, nature-based educational model inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy. The preschool provides young children with opportunities to learn through exploration, discovery and interaction with the natural environment during critical stages of development.
In addition to its educational mission, Fenner Nature Center supports conservation and habitat restoration through stewardship initiatives and volunteer opportunities. Community members participate in projects that help preserve local ecosystems while strengthening connections to the land and wildlife that call the area home.
Throughout the year, the center hosts popular events such as the Maple Syrup Festival, Earth Day Extravaganza, World Migratory Bird Day celebrations and the Apple Butter Festival. These programs encourage community engagement while highlighting the importance of environmental conservation and outdoor recreation.
