Community Clean-Up Day

The all-volunteer, nonprofit Michigan Urban Farming Initiative (MUFI), will hold a community clean-up day themed “Grow Where You’re Planted” from noon to 4 p.m., October 2, at 7432 Brush Street, in Detroit, to help keep the neighborhood beautiful.

MUFI will distribute trash bags, masks, gloves and refreshments. Participants will be provided with a late lunch immediately following the clean-up. Children and pets on leashes are welcome. They recommend volunteers wear comfortable protective clothing with long sleeves to avoid injury or insect bites. Sunscreen is also encouraged.

MUFI engages the community in sustainable agriculture. Challenges unique to urban communities like Detroit such as vacant land and food security present a unique opportunity to empower urban communities by using agriculture as a platform to promote education and sustainability while reducing socioeconomic disparity.
