Telephone Of The Wind

Brandi Kloostra, Local Resident, The Telephone Of The Wind

The Telephone Of The Wind is a vintage, green rotary phone mounted on a tree along the Lakeside Trail on Hines Drive. Its purpose is to help ease grief by placing a call to a lost loved one. According to the American Psychological Association, research shows that most people can recover from loss on their own through the passage of time if they have social support and healthy habits. Local resident Brandi Kloostra coped with the 2019 loss of her father, Alexander Parenti, Jr., by dedicating extra free time during the pandemic outside with her family. Together, they created feel-good projects including The Telephone Of The Wind, which helped Kloostra’s healing and offers that gift to others battling isolation, grief, and loss.

I'm working with Canton resident Brandi Kloostra to raise awareness for The Telephone Of The Wind (https://thetelephoneofthewind.com/) that she and her family installed on the Lakeview Trail in Hines Park. After losing her father almost three years ago, Brandi learned about the original Wind Phone in Japan and felt it would be awesome to replicate it locally for herself and others to visit and symbolically connect with lost loved ones. She and her family will visit The Telephone Of The Wind next Wednesday, April 27 to commemorate the third anniversary of her father's passing. We are happy to share photos and videos of the phone and the family's memorial visit.

On January 18, 2022, fellow resident Christopher Badynee discovered The Telephone Of The Wind on his daily walk, which he recorded on his smartphone and can be viewed on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/reel/CbXWsR6FSJa/?igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY=). During his stroll, Badynee discovered The Telephone Of The Wind placed along the trail by the Kloostra family. After reading the sign, Badynee became emotional and picked up the green, rotary telephone to dial his late daughter’s old number. “Oh Shae, I love you so much. We miss you. It’s impossible to say goodbye forever so I’m not going to do it,” said Badynee. After the experience, Badynee said something told him to go off the trail that day and his walk led him to that telephone. “There was a bench there, so I sat and wept for a bit, stretched a great big stretch, and said thank you out loud,” Badynee said.
