Climbing the Walls Over Christmas Break

Nov 28, 2020 12:42PM ● By John Voell

DYNO Climbing and Fitness is Detroit’s first indoor climbing gym, located at 3500 Orleans Street, in Detroit, with more than 18,000 square feet of bouldering and rope climbing, a traditional fitness area with cardio and weights, yoga studio, full locker rooms, lounge space and café.

Founder Dino Ruggeri, from Grosse Pointe, wanted to make climbing accessible to everyone, even in the city. His interest began at Planet Rock, in Ann Arbor, and he later became a ski instructor in Colorado. The plans for the business became official in November 2016.

COVID-19 precautions are in place, prioritizing safety for staff and climbers, Ruggeri says. Exercising in the gym will be by reservation and masks will be mandatory, which will work with climbing, because it is not cardio-intensive. A computer will time check-ins and stations for hand washing. The large space makes it easy to practice social distancing, and a powerful air conditioning system incorporates fresh air.

When not climbing, patrons can use the fitness area equipped with free weights, artificial turf and cardio equipment. They also offer yoga classes. Memberships are available.
