Pepe’s Salt Spa is offering 30- or 50-minute halotherapy sessions performed in an active/controlled salt room equipped with a halogenerator that crushes pharmaceutical-grade salt and disperses it into the air. By crushing the salt particles to the average size of two microns, the salt aerosol dispersed into the room reaches not only the main airway tract and bronchi when inhaled, but also the bronchiole and alveoli, which are the smallest parts of the respiratory system, where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.

            Pharmaceutical-grade salt is the only salt used because only sodium chloride dissolves completely in water and does not stay in the lungs. Other salts are dangerous to inhale because they contain minerals and dirt that will not dissolve in water; therefore, those particles remain in the respiratory system if inhaled. Salts containing minerals and vitamins such as Himalayan salt are meant for the digestive system, not the lungs.
