Share the Beauty of Native Plants

The Harris Nature Center (HNC) will conduct a Spring Native Plants Sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., May 6, including Michigan native shrubs, sedges, grasses, wildflowers, ferns and complete garden kits. Proceeds benefit HNC. All plants are grown locally at Designs by Nature, Go Grow Plant Natives, and Michigan Woodland Wildflowers and Ferns. Community members can order plants ahead of time or shop on the day of the sale.

Restoring native plant habitat is vital to preserving biodiversity. By creating a native plant garden, each patch of habitat becomes part of a collective effort to nurture and sustain the living landscape for birds and other animals. Over the last century, urbanization has taken intact, ecologically productive land and fragmented it with manicured lawns and exotic ornamental plants. The continental U.S. has lost 150 million acres of habitat and farmland to urban sprawl, a trend that isn’t slowing. This human-dominated landscape no longer supports functioning ecosystems, and the remaining isolated natural areas are not large enough to support wildlife.
