Bioneers Conference Includes Tours and Activities

University of Detroit Mercy and Great Lakes Bioneers Detroit will host their 17th annual conference on October 14 and 15 in the new Student Union on the McNichols Campus with the theme Earth is our Mentor, Measure and Model, to provide a platform for residents to create innovative solutions to environmental and social problems with a focus in Metro Detroit and Michigan.

Speakers include environmental steward Naim Edwards, Planet Detroit founder and editor Nina Ignaczak and many others, plus panels and “learnshops” with graduate students, alumni and professors from University of Detroit Mercy.

Tours cover community urban garden projects in southeast and northwest Detroit, wastewater recycling, solar projects and an environmental justice tour of key sites of pollution and environmental regeneration in Detroit. Youth will have hands-on experience in generating solar power, cultivating mushrooms, composting, building bird houses and sculpting with clay.

Registration is from $0 to $100. Youth 12 to 18 can attend for a day for $5 when accompanied by a parent or teacher. Location: 4001 W. McNichols Rd., Detroit. To register, visit UDMercy.edu/academics/special/bioneers/index.php.
