Wheels on Rails Railbike Tour Trail

The first railbike tour trail in Michigan is opening on May 25. Cyclists will be able to enjoy the great outdoors of pure Michigan and the beauty of a historic railway. The six-mile tour uses custom-made rail bikes designed for use on out-of-service rail lines. The pedal-powered carts have the same style as recumbent bikes in the way people sit on them and pedal. When going on a railbike adventure, it’s common to leave in a group with tour leaders at the front and back for safety, with the pace set by the lead guide. Individuals, couples and groups can choose from a tandem bike for two or a quad bike for a group of four.

Wheels on Rails was founded by Macie Hefron. Her love for the outdoors, cycling and railroads led her to rail biking. The original goal was to open wherever she could find tracks, and in searching for a location, Hefron came to the realization that many Michigan railroads have been ripped out and made into bike paths. With years of research and several phone calls, trips and perseverance, she was able to offer rail biking excursions in her home state of Michigan for a unique experience in a beautiful setting that guests will remember for a lifetime.

Location: 5843-5853 U.S. 31, Grawn. Pull off onto State St., turn left on Brooke St. and park diagonal to the tracks in the gravel area. Look for the signs. For more information, call 231-714-0656, email [email protected] or visit WheelsOnRailsMI.com.
